The National Scheme of Incentives to Girls for Secondary Education was launched in May 2008 to encourage the enrollment of girls aged 14-18 at the secondary stage, particularly those who have completed Class VIII. The scheme aims to support the secondary education of such girls by providing incentives.
The scheme covers:
- All SC/ST girls who pass Class VIII.
- Girls who pass Class VIII from Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas (regardless of their caste) and enroll in Class IX in State/UT Government, Government-aided, or local body schools.
- Girls must be below 16 years of age (as of March 31) upon joining Class IX.
- Exclusions: Married girls, girls studying in private unaided schools, and those enrolled in schools run by the Central Government (such as KVS, NVS, and CBS-affiliated Schools).
Under the scheme, a fixed deposit of Rs. 3,000 is made in the name of eligible girls. They can withdraw the amount along with interest upon reaching 18 years of age or upon passing the 10th class examination.
For the academic year 2015-16, proposals or lists of beneficiaries need to be submitted/uploaded online via the National Scholarship Portal (NSP).
